Myth

Surge protector? She’ll be right, mate.

Fact

Without surge protection, you are vulnerable to a power surge damaging your electronics as well as your phone and cable lines. The cost of a surge protector is by far cheaper than the cost of replacing your flat screen telly!

Myth

This surge protector is expensive; it must work better than the rest!

Fact

There is no evidence that the price reflects the quality of the surge protector. The pricier ones most likely have more fancy features but you can still get a good quality surge protector at a reasonable price.

Myth

All power boards are surge protectors.

Fact

While some power boards have a surge protector built-in, not all have this function. Some are just extension cords for multiple outlets. Check the packaging for surge protection before you hand over your cash. For advice try your local Jaycar .

Myth

I have a generator and surge suppressor , so I don’t need a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply).

Fact

Yes, backup generators help during power outages but they have little to no protection against other power disturbances. By using a UPS it will provide near-instantaneous protection from input power interruptions, by supplying energy stored in batteries. Though the power source is fairly short, it will provide enough power to start a nearby power source or properly shut down protected equipment. Don’t forget generators can create harmful power effects when switching between the main power source and the generator power. A UPS is advised. Myth

Nah, my business is too small to worry about surge protectors.

Fact

Power surges don’t care if you have a small or large business. They can happen anywhere. Small businesses are often not in the position to be without their electronics for long lengths of time as they rely more heavily on this equipment to run the show. A power surge will overload and fry the electronics within your PC. While an outage doesn't do a great deal of damage to a power supply or motherboard, the subsequent surge will. This will result in a computer that won't turn on after a power outage occurs.

You can also get a permanent surge protector which is more powerful than power point or outlet-based surge protectors. They should be installed after the main switch and should be protected by a suitable fuse or circuit breaker which can only be installed by a fully licensed and qualified electrician.

1. Check your windows and doors

Draw curtains at dusk to keep the heat in. The best curtains are:

7. The importance of insulation

Good quality insulation helps keep the heat in during winter and out during summer. This makes your house easier and cheaper to heat properly, and more comfortable and healthier to live in. Hot air rises so insulating the ceiling is the easiest, most affordable, and effective option. Prioritise the ceiling and then shift your focus to under the floor and in the walls.

Family Rules Around Electrical Safety

Now that you have given your kids a child-friendly overview on electrical safety and some potential consequences of mishandling electricity, it’s time to set some family rules. See some examples from our Director Damo’s household below:

Never poke sharp objects into the toaster or electrical sockets.
Never touch electrical appliances without your parents’ supervision.
Never climb the fence at an electrical substation to retrieve a ball.
Never fly your kite or climb a tree near overhead power lines.
Never touch electrical appliances or light switches with wet hands.

This is also a good time to run through the emergency numbers with your kids and what they should do if something goes wrong.

Show your Kids the Right Way

We know kids are little sponges so make sure you follow the family rules yourself and always use electricity in the right way to pass on those good habits. As you go about your day use any opportunity to explain what you are doing with an electrical appliance or switch i.e. turning the power point off before pulling the electric blender’s plug out of the wall.

Safety Tips for the Household

Use child-proof covers on electrical outlets while your kids are little and keep cords out of reach.
Avoid phone chargers and cords ending up in your kid’s mouth by putting them up when not in use or you’re not around to monitor.
Keep liquids well away from electrical appliances.
Do not overload power outlets.
Correctly install extension cords as they can be a harmful trip or strangling hazard. You can run extension cords behind furniture and along walls to avoid tripping. Make sure they are firm to the wall so kids can’t get twisted up in them but not too tight as this can put pressure on the prongs in the outlet and cause damage to the cord and the socket. Extension cords shouldn’t be used as a permanent solution but if you have to use them for an extended period, you should pin them neatly along the skirting board and over door frames with removable sticky hooks.
Show your kids how to remove a plug by holding it and not pulling at the cord.
Don’t leave cords on the ground in a coil with power charging through them as they can overheat.
Have safety switches installed to cut power immediately if there is an emergency.

Whether you’re planning a cheeky getaway or want to spend Christmas with your loved ones, you’ll need to do a little planning beforehand to prevent any festive mishaps.

Unfortunately, many people overlook issues surrounding electrical safety when planning their much-needed breaks.

To remedy this problem, we’ve put together some helpful electrical safety tips for the holidays to keep you and your family safe.

1. Don’t Overload Electrical Outlets

Plugging several high-wattage appliances into a single outlet at once could lead to an electrical fire.
